The Directorate criminal investigation (DCI) is investigating an incident in which a son of major Sportpesa shareholder and former Nairobi Mayor Dick Wathika committed suicide in Nairobi

The young man identified as Kanyiri Wathika is a son of a major Sportpesa shareholder. He was found dead in his room, in what is suspected to be an act of suicide. Police later moved the body to the mortuary.

Dick Wathika, died in 2015 after a short illness. He was a former mayor of Nairobi and Makadara MP.

In 2007 Election he was declared the winner for the Makadara seat but the courts annulled his victory on the 30th April 2010. Lady Justice Kalpana Rawal ruled that the election was marred by irregularities.

Rawal told the jammed court that Dick Wathika was not validly elected. She added that, ” I will rule in the afternoon whether I will stay the judgment before giving the Speaker of parliament the certificate nullifying Dick Wathika’s election.”

The current Nairobi Governor Gideon Mbuvi Kioko of NARC-Kenya trounced Wathika in the by-election held on the 20th of September 2010. Reuben Ndolo of ODM came second and Dick was a dismal third. In 2013, Dick Wathika lost in his bid for the Mukurwe-ini Parliamentary Seat.

A postmortem on the son of the former Nairobi mayor will be carried out later this week.

The former mayor was a major shareholder of the biggest betting firm in Kenya Sportpesa. The widow Ms. Asenath Wacera Maina, has a 20% share at the firm but leads a quiet life.
