Siaya Senator James Orengo who is also the Senate Minority Leader seems to be a lonely man when it comes to decision making within ODM. A keen observer of Luo Nyanza politics may have noticed that as we headed to the 2017 elections Orengo had created a power axis in Luo Nyanza which comprised Hons Millie Odhiambo and Jakoyo Midiwo.
This troop ‘choppered’ around Luo Nyanza nearly every weekend holding fundraisers left right and centre. They were rumored to be a rebel movement within ODM and actually boycotted the Kasarani elections. The source of the then sudden wealth is a story for another day
Post 2017 gave Orengo an opportunity to set up a new power ring. With Jakoyo having lost, Orengo recruited new players into his team. He signed Gem MP Elisha Odhiambo, Alego Usonga MP Sam Atandi, Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo, Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Kisumu Senator Fred Outa and lately Migori Senator Ochilo Ayacko
What’s Orengo’s plan?
It seems Orengo is trying to create a power base parallel to Raila’s in Luo Nyanza. Sources close to him disclose that he’s praying that the BBI recommendation for a Regional Governor come through so that he becomes the Luo Nyanza Regional Governor having placed his said allies in strategic positions to ensure that he’s elected as such.

He has even promised to finance their campaigns for whatever seat they seek as long as they pledge to help him achieve his quest. The source of these campaign funds is also a story for another day
What has surprised Orengo and his troops whoever is that unknown to them Raila has spies within their camp who have disclosed this scheme. It is this information about Orengo’s political hypocrisy that has led to his said allies being politically castrated back in their respective electoral jurisdictions and in Parliament.
Hons Millie, Elisha and Atandi have been relegated to peripheral committees where their visibility is minimal. Hon Otiende and Senator Outa seem to have survived this onslaught but for how long we don’t know. Senator Kajwang was replaced as Counties Public Accounts Committee Chair and Senator Ayacko who was intent on replacing him was implored upon to withdraw.
It’s also instructive to note that Hon Atandi who had always been enthusiastically defending Raila in media houses has suddenly forgot the way to these media houses. Is he sulking?
What remains to be seen is how long how far and how wide this isolation of Orengo will go. What we know however is that as the stars of Hons Ochilo, Kajwang, Millie, Elisha, Atandi and Orengo wane, the stars of Hons Junnet, Wanga and Wandayi shine brighter
