There have been several political visits camouflaged as development tours into Western Kenya in the recent past, but can the Luhya Nation produce the next King?
The government, through the only son of the Mulembe Nation in cabinet CS Eugene Wamalwa, has been on visits inspecting development projects and promising the people of Mulembe goodies from roads to the revival of collapsed sugar companies. The CS has been accompanied on these tours by several cabinet colleagues and Governors from the Luhya Nation plus COTU boss Francis Atwoli
As the government does its tours, the political party constellation in Western Kenya has also experienced some activity. Ford Kenya Party Leader Moses Wetangula seems to have been replaced as Party Leader by a cabal led by Kanduyi MP Hon Wafula Wamunyinyi.

They claim to be the new bosses at Simba House. Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala, is for all intents and purposes ODM more than ANC. ANC Party Leader Musalia Mudavadi seems to have discovered a new link with Moses Wetangula and they’re speaking one language. The language of the ever-elusive Luhya unity.
In addition to the said happenings, KANU Party Leader hosted Mulembe Nation leaders the other day in Kabarak. The delegation constituted the same ‘development’ wing that has been running around Western Kenya villages.
If we put all these into perspective we will notice that there’s a sudden race to get the Luhya vote into one basket. The question is which and whose basket it is. Will the efforts bears fruit? Can the Luhya Nation produce the next King?
Is the vote being put into one basket to have a Presidential candidate from the community or to take the basket away from Luhyaland?
An analysis of the various formations doesn’t help us much in getting an answer. Francis Atwoli who is the de facto leader of the ‘development’ wing is a KANU diehard but has always never shied away from confessing that he supports Raila.
Can he support Raila while he’s in another party? How genuine is his love for Raila? Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya is Raila’s head boy in Western so his loyalty is known. CS Eugene Wamalwa is a conformist and is at the beck and call of President Uhuru.
If Uhuru cuts ties with Raila, he goes quits the group. He is directionless without Uhuru. Moses Wetangula has so many issues to sort out at the moment. He’s also quickly fading away from our televisions.
Musalia Mudavadi is the only one who is sure of where he is headed. He is the only one from the group that has declared that he’s going for nothing short of the Presidency. From how he’s conducting his business he seems more organized and determined than on previous occasions.
If you look at the numbers game going by census figures, the Luhya Nation has an upper hand in the 2022 game since it will be very unlikely that we’ll have an Mt Kenya Presidential candidate (a running mate is also remote). The Kalenjin Nation is lost in this game. The system thinks he contracted leprosy. The Luo Nation seems headed for another disappointment even before we get to 2022.
The Luhya Nation has the opportunity to make a King, or be King! If they get organized!
