Munich will meet Paris Saint-Germain in the final on Sunday
Lisbon – Bayern Munich beat Lyon 3-0 and iis in the final of the Football Champions League for the first time since 2013. The top favorite from Munich prevailed on Wednesday at the final tournament in Lisbon against Olympique Lyon 3-0 (2-0). Serge Gnabry scored two goals (18th, 33rd), Robert Lewandowski scored another one (88th).
In the final on Sunday (9 p.m.), David Alaba and his colleagues will face Paris Saint-Germain.
Lyon had already eliminated two heavyweights after the Corona break with Juventus Turin and Manchester City. Bayern also had problems with the surprise team, only in seventh place when the French championship was canceled, in the initial phase.
Lyon won more duels and found the first two big chances through Memphis Depay (4th) and Karl Toko Ekambi (17th). In between, Leon Goretzka knocked for Bayern for the first time (11th).
Less than a minute after Ekambi had prevailed on the right side and hit the bar, Gnabry struck on the other side. The 25-year-old pulled from right to center and hit the Kreuzeck with a remarkable left-hand shot from the edge of the penalty area. With the lead in the back, Bayern got the game under control, Alaba offered a strong performance as head of defense in the center.
The man in the first half was Gnabry. The German was also involved in the creation of his second goal. He served Ivan Perisic. Lewandowski did not yet bring the following cross pass over the line, Gnabry dusted off from close range – his ninth goal in the current Champions League season. Only club colleague Lewandowski (15) and the ex-Salzburg Erling Haaland (10) met more often.
Perisic could have decided the game after the break, but failed alone in front of Lyon goalie Anthony Lopez (51.). His Bayern counterpart Manuel Neuer subsequently had to stand out against Ekambi (58th). Lyon remained dangerous after winning the ball, but Alaba held the Munich back line together.
Substitute Philippe Coutinho’s 3: 0 did not count due to offside (80th), but Lewandowski made up for it in the finish. The Pole hit a header from a Joshua Kimmich free kick. Five days after the historic 8-2 in the quarter-finals against FC Barcelona, Bayern were able to cheer again in front of empty stands.
Bayern coach Hansi Flick can now do the same to Jupp Heynckes on Sunday. Munich still has the chance to repeat their 2013 triple win. Five players were already there seven years ago when they last won the Champions League in addition to the championship and cup – in addition to Alaba and his neighbor Jerome Boateng, Neuer, Thomas Müller and Javi Martinez.
So far, Bayern have triumphed five times in the most important European Cup competition. Since this has been known as the Champions League, this has been achieved in 2001 and 2013. The Munich Olympique had already eliminated Lyon in the 2010 semi-finals – at that time in two games 1-0 and 3-0. In the final, however, they failed to Inter Milan (0: 2). (APA, August 19, 2020)
